From the office
to the place to be

Introducing desk-sharing, setting up a table football table and moving a few pieces of office furniture around? That’s what many people think of when they hear ‘office design for New Work’. Sorry, but we’re afraid we’ll have to disappoint you. Shared desks simply aren’t enough to accommodate hybrid, flexible working models in office design. So if it’s not just about new office furniture – what is it about, then? It’s about turning an office into a real ‘place to be’: a place that brings people together, encourages interaction, inspires and enables productive work. At the same time, many companies face the challenge of using existing space more intelligently – without sacrificing attractive, identity-defining working environments. This requires solutions that make the transformation of the world of work visible – spatially, functionally and culturally.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution for your perfect office design. That’s why we offer personalised advice, perfectly tailored to the needs of your business and your staff. Even if it’s just a specific area, we’re happy to take a holistic look at your business and your space. What do your office premises currently look like? Is there any production or specific technology on site? How many staff work in the office? Does working from home play a role? What is your company’s history? Is there a specific budget? We often clarify all these questions during workshops before we get started on the actual office design for your workplace.

Four steps
to the perfect
office set-up.
01
Defining a clear strategy
An office concept is always a tool, as it defines the direction in which a company is heading. If self-fulfilment – in other words, ‘New Work’ – is playing an increasingly important role, you’ll need to make different changes to the space than you would in a manufacturing business without flexible working from home. If ‘Adaptive Work’ – that is, resilience and agility – is a key priority for your organisation, you’ll need space to foster a culture of learning and opportunities for rapid change. If your office serves as a space for inspiration – because clients are also present there – you’ll need to set a different focus. You therefore need a strategy that clearly defines both your company’s USP and its identity. As you can see, it’s about much more than just office furniture.
02
Employee involvement
Our interior architects and designers translate your corporate strategy into a spatial concept that takes into account everything that is important for your employees’ wellbeing. To do this, however, they need the opportunity for your staff to have their say. That is why, during this phase of the design process, we engage in dialogue with the people in your organisation. We listen to concerns, collate feedback and involve your staff in the development of the concept. The perfect office only works if the interests of the staff are adequately taken into account.
03
Unique, modern design
One of our core strengths at KNOBLAUCH is our interdisciplinary spatial design. Our interior designers, architects and lighting designers form the creative foundation for your office design. Our aim: to create the perfect office for you, one that optimally combines strategy, identity and processes into a bespoke solution. You can look forward to our creativity, as well as our in-depth expertise in furniture, materials and the possibilities within office design. And last but not least: in all our designs, people’s wellbeing takes centre stage, as we also incorporate wellbeing-focused approaches into our design work – supported, for example, by acoustic solutions and intelligent lighting concepts. After all, not all office furniture is created equal.
04
Communication is everything
Change always involves a greater need for communication and support. It’s important to build anticipation amongst your staff, but also to coordinate supporting initiatives. After all, changes to the working environment usually bring with them related issues, such as new ways of working. Our support on your journey to the perfect office doesn’t end once all the desks are in place and the lights are switched on; it goes a little further. We’re happy to generate enthusiasm and motivation by showing your staff exactly how the office is fitted out, explaining the office design and thereby helping them to appreciate their new working environment. “A new office also needs good change communication.” Josephine Winkens
“New Work has long been a reality and is no longer a novelty. However, many office concepts are still lagging far behind.”

More than just office furniture

A company’s identity must also be evident in the workplace – regardless of whether it is a head office, a branch or a subsidiary. After all, an office is no longer merely a place of work, but a physical anchor for a sense of identity and community. Values and corporate culture come to life in built spaces – thereby strengthening employees’ sense of belonging. Particularly in times of skills shortages, investing in healthy workplace design and a modern working environment is extremely important. If these values are missing from the space, companies risk employees becoming emotionally detached. And whilst desks are easily replaceable, motivated, healthy employees are everything. Ultimately, it’s not just about materials, colours, lighting, acoustics and furnishings – but about the identity of the space. And an office design that fits your corporate culture – and inspires employees, job applicants and guests alike.

The workplace is becoming
a social hub

Collaboration requires spaces that are designed with this in mind: meeting areas that encourage interaction, communication and creativity. These could, for example, be small, informal communication hubs such as open lounges, ideal for a quick brainstorming session or a chat ‘in passing’. And then there is the heart of every office, where most (informal) interaction probably takes place: the café bar – the modern version of the coffee kitchen – where staff can chat over an espresso in a relaxed, informal atmosphere. These are places that create space for chance encounters and conversations in the workplace – away from formal meetings. In both predominantly in-office and hybrid working structures, the workplace is increasingly becoming a social hub – a meeting place where people can learn together, grow and drive the company forward.

A quiet space for greater concentration

As well as informal meeting places, it is particularly important in open-plan offices to have sufficient quiet spaces for calm, focused work. As traditional private offices have long since become obsolete in most companies and many people usually work together in an open-plan area, it is important to have spaces where staff can delve deeply into topics – without being constantly interrupted. According to a study by Microsoft, employees are interrupted from their work every two minutes by chat requests, emails and meetings. It is clear that concentration often suffers as a result. That is why sufficient comfortable quiet spaces should always be factored into the design.

Modern meeting culture

And then there are meetings, which have increased significantly in recent years. According to a Microsoft study, employees spend around 19 hours a month in meetings. But in a hybrid working culture – perhaps even one with international locations – how do you create spaces that ensure remote participants can take part in meetings on an equal footing? This involves not only quiet meeting rooms, but also high-end conference equipment and technology (360-degree cameras, conference room microphones and dual screens).

Study: Quality
is key

As part of the Office 21 innovation network, Fraunhofer IAO has concluded that the purposeful design of office spaces is crucial for creative collaboration. The findings of the study, published in June 2026 and involving around 1,900 participants, are clear: particularly in settings with a high proportion of on-site staff, but also in hybrid working arrangements, high-quality, well-designed and thoughtfully planned office spaces have an enormous impact on creativity. Furthermore, cross-departmental meetings have a positive impact on a company’s capacity for innovation. In medium-sized and larger organisations in particular, it is therefore important to create space for larger meetings – for example, in the form of flexible spaces that can be reconfigured at short notice for events such as staff meetings or staff parties. Tiered seating areas in foyers or atria are also popular, as they can then be used for larger events.

Workplace kitchens & canteens

12 noon – off to the canteen! Good food is important – and it’s so much more than that. A staff canteen is a meeting place, a break room and a social hub in everyday working life, and is therefore an area we do not overlook in our planning. Our aim is for staff to feel at home here, thanks to modern furniture and materials. Furthermore, a modern staff canteen should meet a variety of requirements: from a quick lunch at a bar table to a leisurely team lunch or a spontaneous afternoon workshop – everything should be possible. Good acoustics, a harmonious lighting concept and ergonomic furniture are also important here. Particularly charming are seating elements that lend the space a lounge-like atmosphere, turning the staff canteen into a favourite spot in the company.
